Course No.: CGE228

Level: Beginner

Prerequisites: None

Description: Learn how machines work by harnessing the powers of wind, water, and solar energy! Build fully-functioning replicas of alternative energy-powered machines.

Course Goals & Learning Outcomes: STEM Concepts: renewable energy; solar, wind, and hydropower; energy storage; energy generation; clean energy; and more

  • Solar Power: Harnessing energy from the sun is one goal of the Green Revolution. While the sun’s energy is essentially a constant, its effect on earth is variable due to cloud cover and time of year. Kids will create a solar car or a crank man and investigate how they can effectively use the energy of the sun.
  • Water (Hydro) power: Examining the energy that is available to the model (potential energy) and then how that energy is transformed into movement (kinetic energy) represents the focus of the lessons related to water power. By creating a hydroelectric generator we will find out how to use the energy from water.
  • Wind power: Through the investigation of wind-powered models like windmills, students will get practical information about this form of energy and the opportunity to explore and investigate this renewable energy source on their own.
